Located about 500 meters north of Barkhor Street in Lhasa, Tibet, Ramoche Temple was built in 7th century by Princess Wencheng. The existing construction area of the Ramoche Temple is 4,000 square meters. The temple mainly houses the 8-year-old life-size Buddism statue of Sakyamuni, which is Princess Chizun brought from Nepal.
It’s said that Ramoche Temple was an imitation of the Tang Dynasty in the early year, the building was magnificent, which attracted many monks from inside and outside Tibet go to this temple for studying the Dharma. Unfortunately, after the fire in a few times, the original appearance of Ramoche Temple was gone. Later, the Ramoche Temple was repaired, but the Tang model was changed to a Tibetan structure. Now, Ramoche Temple covers an area of 4,000 square meters and is mainly composed of a gatehouse, a courtyard, a prayer corridor, a large hall, and a Buddhist temple.
The reputation and scale of the Ramoche Temple are not as good as the Jokhang Temple but has a very special feature. The architectural style of the Ramoche Temple combines the characteristics of Chinese and Tibetan architecture. The original temple management was also hosted by people who are from Tang dynasty, so the Ramoche Temple is not only one of the earliest temples in Tibet, but also a symbol of the unity between Tang dynasty and Tibet. It occupies an extremely important position in the history of Sino-Tibetan ethnic relations.

2 The History of Ramoche Temple
The establishment of the Ramoche Temple has a close relationship with the marriage of Princess Wencheng and Songtsan Gambo, the first king of Tibet. In 634 AD before Princess Wencheng entered Tibet, the princess Chizun has married to Songtsan Gambo and has brought 8-year-old life-size Buddism statue of Sakyamuni. Later, Princess Wencheng assisted the Princess Chizun to build the Jokhang Temple.
According to the book <The Jokhang Temple Catalogue> by the Fifth Dalai Lama, the main shrine of the Ramoche Temple is the original 12-year-old life-size Buddhism statue of Sakyamuni, which was the Princess Wencheng brought from Chang’ an. The main temple of the Jokhang Temple was originally for 8-year-old life-size Buddhism statue of Sakyamuni, which was the Princess Chizun brought from Nepal. After the death of Songtsan Gambo, by the wishes of Princess Wencheng, the Sakyamuni Buddha statues were replaced between Jokhang Temple and Ramoche Temple.

There are many cultural relics in the Ramoche Temple. Among them, the most famous of which is 8-year-old life-size Buddha statue of Sakyamuni. The famous Lhasa Upper Secret House was also built in Ramoche Temple. This is the place where the Gelu monks who have achieved great success in the Buddhist studied Dharma and secret Tibetan Buddhism.
